Dr. Robert J. Toomey III is a double board-certified foot and ankle surgeon. Because of his advanced training and certifications, he regularly performs complex and cutting-edge foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Toomey has received advanced training and certifications in ankle arthroscopy, total ankle replacements, and minimally invasive bunion surgery, as well as other disciplines. His skills have earned him the important positions of section chief of podiatric surgery at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and member of the credentialing committee at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.
Dr. Toomey often employs bone marrow aspirate containing the patient’s own stem cells to quicken healing rates in ligaments, tendons, and bones. He has mastered the use of amniotic tissue therapy (regenerative therapy) to produce outstanding outcomes for a host of conditions his patients present.
Though being a highly sought-after surgeon, he believes in an initial conservative approach that tailors treatment needs to each individual patient. For example, Dr. Toomey may use Extracorporeal Pulse Shockwave Therapy to initially treat patients complaining of heel pain prior to considering surgical intervention. Many other conservative modalities are explored prior to surgery. Dr. Toomey always makes each individual patient feel like a priority and it is his pleasure to treat each patient’s surgical and non-surgical needs.
Dr. Toomey performed his residency at the highly acclaimed and sought-after Diabetic Limb Salvage program of Georgetown University Hospital and Medstar Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Toomey was class president of his medical school and was granted externships at Harvard and Georgetown. In addition, in college he lettered in collegiate football and understands the demanding needs of all levels of athletes.
In his limited free-time, he enjoys spending it with his wife and three young children. He likes to golf and competes in an occasional tournament. Dr. Toomey also has a passion for lecturing to the medical community on regenerative medicine and has authored on novel decompressional osteotomy allograft backfilling procedure techniques.
