When To See A Podiatrist

Bothersome issues with your feet can lead to serious consequences if not promptly treated. Podiatrists, commonly called foot doctors, are uniquely qualified and experienced in treating foot problems. But they also treat the ankle and entire lower leg. Maintaining the optimal health of your feet and lower legs is crucially important as your feet support your body when standing, running, or walking. At Potomac Podiatry Group, our skilled podiatrists in Woodbridge, Sterling, and Chantilly, VA are specialists in treating all problems with the feet and lower leg.

What common issues of the foot should be seen by a podiatrist?

The list below presents issues that our podiatrists commonly treat. The sooner you receive treatment for these conditions, the better to prevent them from progressing.

  • Bunions: Bunions consist of when the big toe joint dislocates, causing a protrusion on the inside of your foot. This bump is usually located at the junction of the big toe and the rest of the foot. Bunions will usually require surgical intervention, particularly if they are not promptly addressed.
  • Hammertoes: Hammertoes involve an unnatural bending of the toe or toes. This condition can also lead to requiring surgery to fix them if not treated immediately.
  • Ingrown toenails: This one is generally an easy fix! Ill-fitting shoes are the main cause of ingrown toenails and attention to your feet and footwear can usually adequately treat and/or prevent this condition.
  • Neuropathy: Neuropathy, usually associated with diabetes, is a condition that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. This condition occurs when nerve signals to and from the foot are disrupted and can cause significant pain or numbness of the foot. In the most severe cases that have not been adequately managed, amputating the foot may be necessary.
  • Plantar Fasciitis (PF): PF involves inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the sole of your foot. It provides significant support to the feet. When it is damaged and not functioning properly, significant pain can result in your heel or on the bottom of your foot.
  • Trauma to the foot or ankle: Dropping something on your foot, tripping and spraining your ankle, or suffering an injury to the foot that results from another type of accident, consulting with a podiatrist in Woodbridge, Chantilly, VA is critical.
  • Plantar warts: Warts are caused by viruses that infect the foot. They may resolve and go away on their own, but you should see a podiatrist to accurately diagnose this condition and determine the best treatment strategy.
